Aireys Farm Shop, quality meat in Cumbria
A little bit about Aireys Farm Shop
Airey's butchers have been in business for over 175 years, and still uses the same site as it did all those years ago. It is now run by Steven Airey, his wife Joanne and Steven's brother Martin.
Of course there were no strict health & safety rules back in the 1830's, and the animals used to be slaughtered on a stone slab in a shed and the meat delivered by horse and cart. Now we have an EEC standard, state of the art abattoir which was opened in June 2006 and a small farm shop.
We opened our Farm Shop in the 1970's, which was then ahead of it's time, this has since been extended and modernised by using a disused garage where the horse cart and vans used to park.
All the meat which is sold through the shop comes from within approx a 12 mile radius and all has full traceability. We use the same farmers for our supplies as we have done for years along with our own stock of Traditional cattle and sheep. These include Aberdeen Angus, Galloway and Highland cattle, and Ryeland, Welsh Black & Herdwick lamb which comes from Millbeck Farm at Great Langdale. None of our stock is force fed like commercial stock and they are all bred slowly, which gives the meat it's taste.
As well as the farm shop & abattoir, we still have a small delivery round which takes in all the small local villages and we also supply the "White Hart Inn" at Bouth & "The Bridge café & Bistro" at NewbyBridge, to name a few. The abattoir supports the local farming community from all over the Lake District and also some of the local butchers who bring in there own stock, therefore giving full traceability to all their customers. We also have Organic status in the abattoir for local organic farmers although we do not sell organic produce in the farm shop.
